from any other part of Kenya .The most productive part of Kenya is highlands
in south west raised volcanic block is split from north to south by the
great rift valley living one one third of the land area in the east two
third in the west .Of the two parts the east is more dramatic since it
is dominated by the mass of MT Kenya giant extinct volcano once higher
than the Everest mountain the rim long since fallen away leaving the eroded
plugs as the twin snow capped peak that reach a height of 5,200meters
{17000ft} close by the north –south traverse of this eastern rift
area is the ABERDEARS or Nyandarua range. The mountain does not match
the grandeur or mount Kenya but nevertheless impressive with blunted peaks
of satina and kinangop at well over 3,600meters {12000ft}the whole mass
confronts the easternly winds of the Indian ocean and drains of the moisture
they have carried .there is the dry lands separating the highlands from
the coast the rainfall falling on the fertile volcanic soils of dense
forest making the Eastern Kenya highlands among the worlds richest agricultural
lands .
Nairobi Kenya’s capital stands at the southern approaches to the
abardere ranges. On the other flank of the rift valley in the west the
ridges and the peaks of the mau range are generally highest along the
wall of the valley itself the wall of the range rises above 3,000 meters
{10,000ft} into an “Afro-alpine “ with the land falling away
gently all the way to Lk.victoria
The highest point west of the rift is another volcano MT. Elgon whose
western flank is bisected by the Kenyan –Uganda border.
